Stephen’s C.O.G.I.C. Ministries was established in 1962 when the young, Elder George and Sister Jean McKinney obeyed the voice of God and began ministry in Southeast San Diego. Literally, the rest is history. Having served this community for 50 years – it’s time to celebrate Bishop George D. McKinney and St. Stephen’s Ministries. For this is the year of JUBILEE!

On Sunday, February 12th Dr. Morris Cerullo of Morris Cerullo World Evangelism Ministries will be the guest homilist at the 8:00 AM Service. Dr. Cerullo, a colleague and long-time friend of St. Stephen’s Ministries, will set the tone, ushering in the spirit of Jubilee and kicking off this year of reflection and celebration. Kensington Church Youth Group Reenacts ‘Las Posadas’ Christmas Story Second Annual Outdoor Community Production Features a Candlelit Procession

Kensington Community Church (KCC), United Church of Christ, celebrated the season with its second annual Las Posadas in Kensington production on Saturday, Dec. 3rd. Put on by the church’s Middle and High School Youth Group, the outdoor reenactment of the Christmas story featured a candlelit community procession with the angel, Mary, Joseph and the donkey as they were turned away by innkeepers at Kensington Café and Starbucks.

Throngs followed Mary and Joseph as they walked down a luminaria-lined street to a Live Nativity and Carol Sing in front of Kensington Community Church. After the event, church members, neighbors and friends enjoyed tamales, piñatas and a petting zoo. Las Posadas is Spanish for “The Inns.”

“Our Las Posadas production is becoming a community tradition in Kensington, celebrating the room we make in our hearts for the peace of Christmas,” said Marg Stark, Youth Group Co- Leader and Religious Education Director at Kensington Community Church.

During its 10 a.m. Sunday service, the church runs a growing religious education program for children ranging from infants to high school students. In addition, the KCC Youth Group meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and engages in service projects, social events, music, and much more.

Life Care Center of Vista collecting gift-filled shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child

At Life Care Center of Vista, residents and associates are participating in a project to share the gift of Christmas with needy children around the world.

As part of the 2011 Operation Christmas Child campaign, the facility invites the community to join the team in filling sturdy shoe boxes (or other similarly sized storage boxes) with a mix of small toys, hard candy, school supplies and personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap. The boxes will be distributed to children in war-torn and poverty-stricken countries by Samaritan’s Purse.

“We are so honored to be a part of this wonderful program and look forward to joining our community in bringing the glory of Christ to these children,” said Sharron Clark, executive director at the facility.

Operation Christmas Child participants are encouraged to include a picture of themselves to create a personal connection. In addition, Samaritan’s Purse asks that participants tape $7 to the inside of the box top to cover shipping and transportation. Ideas for gifts, as well as labels specifying gender and age range, are available at samaritanspurse.org.

This year, the facility’s goal is to collect 600 completed boxes. From now until Nov. 18, community members can drop off boxes in the lobby from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday – Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., on weekends.

Many of you may be familiar with our audio adventure series Jonathan Park (www.JonathanPark.com). This exciting Christian audio drama series desires to share the exciting scientific evidence that is in harmony with the message of Biblical Creation. This series is heard around the world on over 700 radio outlets.

It was this past March I was given a wonderful opportunity to visit Israel with a group of twelve other journalists. Wow, how that trip made an indelible mark in my memory banks.
I am reminded of the landscape of Israel every time I open up my Bible. When I am reading the scriptures and I read about Israel and I read about Jerusalem, I can picture it. When I read about the Sea of Galilee and Jesus walking on the water or calming the storm, I can say, “I was there!”
I have been to the Temple Mount and to the Western Wall, even to lay my hands on the Wall and pray for my loved ones. I have walked down the Via Dolorosa and as I quieted my soul I can get a sense of how great my Father’s love is for me.
I can honestly say I have walked where Jesus walked and I have seen where He taught the multitudes. And for an Evangelical Christian, I don’t think it gets better than that — unless it’s heaven itself.
For some, you can only imagine. But, I encourage many to go to Israel, because you’ll never be the same.
My trip was eight days. But, you can stay for 3 weeks easy. Each day was packed with touring, walking, eating, picture-taking and reading scripture.
When I think what was my favorite place, if I had to pick one. I would choose sitting in the synagogue in Capernaum and reading from the book of Luke, …”that the Spirit of the Lord is upon me…” This town is where Jesus began his ministry. In this town Jesus taught and healed. It was in this town, the light shined. But, then with a flip of a coin, I can say it was when I was baptized in the Jordan River.
Then, there was our visit to Masada. We took the cable cars up, passing the huge walls of the cliffs. Our tour group leader Marion Bleiberg, who shared Israel’s history shadowed by her own Jewish heritage, is what every visitor needs as a tour guide. When we reached the top of this monumental fortress, Marion unfolded the story of what happened to the Jewish people at Masada and their ultimate sacrifice unto death. You can only imagine, but I encourage you to go and see Masada for yourself.
When we visited Caesarea, you could see the area of the Greek Hippodrome where the chariot races were held. You could hear the horse hoofs on the dirt as they came around pulling the Chariots. It was my time to imagine.
As the trip was coming to its last days, the best was yet to come. We all boarded onto the bus and drove to an area that gave the panoramic view of Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. You have to read Psalm 87:1-3, “On the holy mountain stands the city founded by the Lord. He loves the city of Jerusalem more than any other city in Israel. O city of God, what glorious things are said of you!”
I have seen pictures of Jerusalem, but nothing compares to seeing Jerusalem in real-time.
My trip has been the trip of a lifetime. I cherished each day.
I fell in love with Israel. It has given me a kindred spirit to pray for Israel and the peace of Jerusalem. I found Israel has something for everybody — history, food, culture, architecture, and adventure!
Don’t only imagine, go there and see Israel for yourself in real-time!

Investigates Findings in Ancient Tomb:
Show Airs on History Channel on April 20, the Wednesday before Easter

JERUSALEM, April 12, 2011 – A television show that will air on the History Channel the week before Easter makes the case that two Roman nails found in an ancient tomb in the Jerusalem area may have been used to crucify Jesus.

The “Nails of the Cross” airs at 11 p.m. ET Wednesday, April 20. Simcha Jacobovici, a three-time Emmy Award winner who created and hosts the show, describes it as “investigative archaeology,” which interprets the historical record through context and clusters of artifacts.

“We have presented the best archaeological argument to show that these are two of the nails used to crucify Jesus,” Jacobovici says. “With Christians around the world preparing to celebrate Easter, this is a startling discovery.”

The artifacts in question came to light on a cold day in November 1990 in the Peace Forest, south of Jerusalem. Construction workers, widening a road while building a water park, unearthed an ancient tomb with their bulldozer.

When the findings indicated that the cave likely was the family tomb of Caiaphas, the high priest who presided over the trial of Jesus and delivered him to the Romans to be crucified, it created a sensation. One scholar said that he could “hardly imagine a more significant discovery from that period.”

“Nails of the Cross” begins where that story ends.

“Although Caiaphas’ ossuary has been on display around the world and is now in the Israel Museum, two Roman nails, found in the tomb, disappeared,” Jacobovici said. “They were not sketched, photographed, measured or archived.”

So he began an investigation. The goal was to re-enter the tomb, find the nails and determine if they were used to crucify Jesus.

Jacobovici and his team use 21st century technology, including ground-penetrating radar and robotic cameras, to locate the tomb and determine its contents. Their quest for answers takes them beyond Jerusalem to Tel Aviv and even to Turkey to consult with scholars and government officials.

They end up exploring a historical controversy about the role of Caiaphas in Christ’s crucifixion that will be thought-provoking for people of all faiths. They also end up locating the nails, examining them and bringing their story to the world.

The month of January 2011 will mark an anniversary for Roe vs. Wade. In observance to the unborn, it is Sanctity of Human Life month. Many Pregnancy Care Clinics throughout San Diego and South Riverside will host an open house. On Saturday, Jan. 29th, from 7-9 pm., alternatives womens center will be having a special evening with speaker Gianna Jessen at the California Center for the Arts. It will be a free event, but they are asking people to pick up a bracelet as a ticket because the facility seats only 400. The bracelets will be available beginning Jan. 10. To get into the event, you must have a “bracelet” as a ticket to get in. Bracelets can be picked up at alternatives womens center, 257 E. 2nd Ave., in Escondido.

Good News, etc. is mixing with the marketplace! We are excited to team up with Business Prayer Team and Vista Healing Rooms this coming weekend for two outside street fairs.
One will be Saturday, November 6, in Escondido at Kit Carson Park for Justice Day. This event will be an outreach to bring awareness to homelessness, human trafficking and fair trade. The event goes from 2 to 7 pm. Special speaker Steven Cass at 7pm. Hear his story how he is rescuing young woman from the sex trade.
Then on Saturday, we will be at the largest street fair in the country - the Carlsbad Street Fair, on November 7th from sun up to sun down. We will be on Roosevelt just off from Carlsbad Village Drive, heading north.
Good News, etc. will be handing out papers to get more Good News out and to mix with the community. We would love to hear any ideas from our readers. Both prayer teams are excited to pray for people and let God minister to His people. Prayers for healing, personal and business needs will be heard.

This Saturday, September 11th, marks the 9th Anniversary of the 9-11 bombing in New York where thousands were killed and even thousands more scarred from the memory of what took place. We are all on the hunt to find peace and solitude in this place we live, no matter what geographical location you find yourself. Peace of mind is still a priority.
One place i know we will be this Saturday, September 11th as we join with hundreds or we hope to be thousands is at the CityFest event at Mission Bay Park with Luis Palau and 450 of San Diego County's finest churches. There will be quite a lot of things happening for the family and music for the young adults although the old folks can dig on some of the music. It all lifts our hearts upward and fills us with the peace and security of knowing we have a Savior, who loves us and wants what is always best.

Birth Choice of San Marcos is a pro-life, Christian-based pregnancy resource center offering free pregnancy tests, ultrasound and options counseling for over 23 years. They will be opening a satellite office in downtown Oceanside at 611 Mission Ave., and are actively recruiting those who feel called to their ministry to train as volunteer counselors. Their hope is to be fully operational by October 2010, but they are looking to the Christian community to aid them in accomplishing this goal.

Power of Friendship:
It seems natural that with the New Year would come new goals and dreams. As I grow older however, I realize that my goals do not change from year to year but my ability to achieve the goals change. Like this year, I again desire to eat better and become more fit. However, this year I am perfectly content to watch my daughter workout with her Wii Fit game and do not have any desire to participate in the activity. And because my family life is busier and my work is never ending, I have no extra margin to fit in becoming more fit.
Regardless of the verbal support of my family, they would not be the ones keeping me accountable on a daily basis. in a daily way. We wake up together, try to eat meals together and say good night to each other but all of us are going in different directions. Love is the foundation of our home life but personal achievement is an individual responsibility.
For me, personally, my faith has not been the motivation to get me to change. My faith instead provides the inspiration to accept the need for change. I want to feel better about myself so I start thinking of ways to accomplish that goal. I have found that the peer pressure (or the friends) in my life are actually the motivating factor to get me to change. Peers are like deadlines dates. They both have the ability to motivate you to complete necessary tasks. Think of reunions or house parties or even going out, we all make a special effort to look extra good.
It is the same thing for me at work. It has not always been the inspiration of spiritual revelations that have kept me going. I really believe that it has been the physical tangible person, having a co-partner who has challenged me as well as encouraged to me to continue. We could become resentful of the peer pressure in our lives or we can be thankful for the power of friendship to change our lives.
Gossip, negativity, criticism, lack of support and judgments can cause anyone to quit because change can be too hard. Personally, I do not blame anyone for quitting. The world is filled with people who lack support, finances, encouragement and personal abilities to break out of habitually bad patterns. But I would recommend that they find a friend or an accountability partner to talk things out and get perspective before making any big decisions. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up."
Sometimes, it is in the honest sharing of your heart that someone else can give you the wisdom to endure. Sometimes, it is the person who asks you, “How’s it going?” and takes an interest to ask, that keeps you speaking and planning and dreaming and going. That kind of support might not ever come from your family but it might come from a friend. Family members have vested interests in you for themselves…as a spouse or parent or provider or scheduler. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, said it best when stating that God has a wonderful plan for your life and everyone in your life will tell you what it is. But a friend’s expectations are different.
Just because we know we need to change does not mean that it will be easy. Just because others tell us that we need to change does not mean they can give you the tools to do it. Life can be confusing and tough. The power of friendship can cut through the random factors to keep you focused. You do not have to go at it alone; people have been pairing up for years. God is totally into fellowship, counsel, and unity and empowers us through friendship.

Community Members are invited to help Birth Choice of Temecula to restart the Birth Choice Bargain Box Thrift Store for the betterment of this non-profit Pregnancy Resource Center and to help families in need.

Some community members may recall the Birth Choice Bargain Box Thrift Store that was open on Jefferson Avenue in Temecula, CA some years ago. With tough economic times, our client load is up 100% in the past year. Many families need material assistance for their babies and small children. There is an immediate opportunity to reopen this store and this non-profit needs your help. This store could do the following for the community and for Birth Choice of Temecula, a local ministry and charitable Pregnancy Resource Center:
• Provide funds to sustain the center during lean economic times • Provide for a 2000 sq foot space that can house a Thrift Store in an adjoining suite • Provide our existing and new clients more selection in their Mommy and Baby Boutique • Provide community families with another choice in discounted thrift store items. • Help us expand our Earn While You Learn Program for our clients. • Allow us the space to keep and give away more of our donated items from generous members of our community. • Allow you a place to donate gently used items that could be sold or given away in our new store.

Good News, etc. Newspaper is making an international impact . . . . .

Pastor Jim Garlow of Skyline Church recently shared an exciting story about the outreach of Good News, etc. newspaper.

“We just returned from five days at Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana where Carol (his wife) was receiving treatment,” he said. “The April edition of Good News, etc. was there – very conspicuously displayed!”
He said that a Jewish woman, Ann Feinstein from Manhattan, New York (now living in Pennsylvania) was there with her mother. Her husband is owner of the Feinstein Co. that managed Michael Bolton and others.

“She picked up the paper, and became intrigued with it,” Garlow said. “She read everything – even the classifieds. She read the article on Carol’s cancer and thought to herself, ‘too bad this lady does not know about Oasis.’ Then she met Carol and was just stunned!

“She told me — on three occasions — how fascinated she was with the newspaper. Enthralled would be the better word. She loved it.
“As she read it, she was so moved, she said, that she had these thoughts of ‘Oh no! I am being converted!’”

The pastor didn’t say if indeed she took the next step, but she certainly would be someone to pray for salvation.
“It was a very intriguing conversation and I just wanted you to know,” Garlow said. “Way to go!”
